Favorite packaged comfort food.

We almost never eat packaged food in our home. It's not practical and, in most cases, also not healthy. Plus, you can never be sure what's really in there. I mean, how much guar gum do people really need? Disodium isonate? Carageenan?

Anyway, every once in awhile I do get a craving for something really easy and I start to remember things I've enjoyed over the years. Last night, for example. We had cans of stuff in our earthquake kits that get "recycled" once in awhile. I got home after being gone for my normal twelve hours (nine hours at the office and a daily three hour commute) and had a can of Dinty Moore Stew. It was delicious.

Anyone else care to talk about their favorite? Hamburger Helper? Stouffer's Lasagna? Marie Calendar's Chili & Cornbread? What's your pleasure?

      Corn muffin mix.
Growing up we didn't have a lot of money, so sometimes my mom use to make corn cakes and fried ham for dinner. Now whenever I make it myself..I think of my mom, and I get that warm feeling.

i love Jiffy cornbread mix. My grandmother would crumble it up, add some milk, and warm it. I love it plain and its damn good for cornbread dressing.

          <faint>

My sainted southern grandmother just turned over in her grave.

<fighting the urge to scream BLASPHEMY>

I can't say my family never used it, we just never admitted it. Real cornbread made in a cast iron skillet was the norm for us.

Another packaged food for me is Top Ramen. Yeah, yeah, I know, but I can turn a package of Top Ramen into a full meal for two people in less than ten minutes and for less than $2.00. It ain't gourmet but it's cheap, quick and filling and kept me alive when I was a poor bachelor. Of course, I'm not rich now, either, so I still have it once in awhile when my wife, who shuns packaged foods like they're poison, isn't looking.

          Love and light, dear ones.

I'm also a big fan of Jiffy cornbread mix. I'd make the real stuff if I had time, but find that nothing makes a simple meal seem more complete and like you 'cooked' than putting some cornbread next to it.

Holiday time is about hot chocolate to me. I make it from scratch with Hershey's Cocoa and a little evaporated milk along with the regular. Kind of reminds me of my Nana.

On the prepackaged but still yummy front, I can make a pot reast really fast with one of those cooking bag/spice blends that you find in the spice aisle. I think Shilling makes it. You put your meat and cut up veggies into the plastic bag provided with some water, and a little wine, and in a couple of hours you have pot roast. Yum!

Good one, Jennifer. Yeah, there are some pre-packaged spice blends (pot roast, spaghetti, taco) that I remember. There's also the dressings (like Good Seasons Italian and Hidden Valley Ranch) that are still standards for so many.

Of course, even the variations, like Ranch dips and using spaghetti seasoning on a roast, that have been done for so long that they qualify as comfort foods, don't you think.

      Love and light, dear ones.

packaged food is just about all wbe eat around here unless my mom cooks dinner or someone buys out.

My favorite packaged food would have to be chicken strips, but only a certain brand, and more than anything I LOVE going to the Mary's pizza shack Daddy works at and getting chicken parmijaun, with creamy noodles breadsticks and ice tea. I am a foodie, and love eating out.
